It is easy to understand why visual stereotypes of old age exist, all of us will grey and our skin will become lined. But the attached stereotype of the life elderly people live is where my frustration lies. This stereotype is a life of illness, frailty and dependence and, of course, this is a reality for some people.
However, photography predominantly portrays this particular reality, at least when it concerns the everyday woman. Photographic portrayals of the dignified, powerful older woman seem reserved for a parallel world of royalty and superstars.
The photographs of these women are a representation of how I felt whilst listening to their stories. Tales of their life that illustrate their relentlessly positive attitude, their modesty, their strength and their resilience.
